Heavy rain and gusting winds overnight and early today have knocked out power to nearly 200 Fairfielders this morning and closed at least one of the town's public beaches.

The blustery weather -- forecast to continue through most of today -- as of 8:30 a.m. interrupted electric service to 172 customers locally, out of the nearly 24,000 Fairfield accounts, according to the United Illuminating Co.

Meanwhile, the runoff from the heavy rain prompted town health officials to close the beach at Lake Mohegan today as a precaution because of concerns about water quality.

If more heavy rain falls, health officials warn, the town's beaches on Long Island Sound also may be closed later today or tomorrow.
