Things to do in Fairfield this weekend

School's back in full swing for the kids, but that doesn't mean the grownups can't learn a thing or two this weekend in Fairfield. Here's a few suggestions:

Learn how to select the right cheese to go with that wine or beer at the Fromage Friday Club at the Fairfield Cheese Co., 2090 Post Road. The event, from 5 to 8 p.m., costs $10 per person for a gourmet cheese tasting. Bring a favorite wine or beer. For more information, call 203-292-8194.

Learn the basics of abstract landscape painting Saturday at a two-hour workshop led by local artist Linda Schoff at Jennings Beach, 880 South Benson Road. It's never too late to learn to play the piano, or the guitar, for that matter. Visit the grand opening of the Fairfield School of Music, 338 Commerce Drive, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be free demonstrations, registration for lessons, free pizza and hourly raffles for a month of free tuition. Time for an "Adventure" at noon Saturday with Connecticut Audubon Society staff. Meet at the Ash Creek Open Space at Riverside Drive and Turney Road. Take a break from all the learning Sunday at the Holy Cross Church Slovenian & American Polka Picnic, 750 Tahmore Drive, from noon to 6 p.m. A polka Mass will be held at 11 a.m., followed by all-day entertainment, food, beverages, games, crafts and raffles.
