Third time’s a charm: Walgreen’s opens store on Kings Highway

Opening a new Walgreen’s in town has not always proven to be an easy task. The national pharmacy chain faced neighborhood opposition when stores were proposed in both the Stratfield and Southport sections of town over the last several years, and neither was built.
But a new Kings Highway location didn’t feel the same heat and opened at the end of July, replacing an older store in the Stop & Shop plaza on Villa Avenue.
The new Walgreen’s replaces the former I. Brown Bros store on the corner of Jennings Road and Kings Highway, along with two other commercial buildings and a three-family house. The furniture store, which had closed years earlier, had deteriorated and became a fixture on the town’s list of blighted properties.
Now, the new 14,000-square-foot retail building is open 24 hours a day, with the pharmacy open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is also a drive through pharmacy window.
Zoning approval had intially been granted in 2008 to build a retail/commercial building on the property, but the project never materialized. A new certificate of zoning compliance was issued in February 2014 for the Walgreen’s, and work to clear the property began a short time later.
With the new store open, the older Walgreen’s on Villa Avenue has closed its doors. The former outlet is currently in the process of liquidating assets, include store shelving.
