Turnovers turned out to be the difference on Saturday in the Staples football team's 35-10 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe at Staples Stadium on Homecoming Day. Staples raised its record to 7-0. Ludlowe dropped to 0-7.

Wrecker senior Tyler Jacobs had four interceptions, the first one in the first quarter. Overall, Staples forced eight Falcon turnovers.

While the Wreckers did well on defense, they struggled on offense and committed four turnovers. They failed to capitalize on Jacobs' first interception as senior Jason Mawicke missed 34-yard field goal.

Jacobs did it on offense with three touchdown runs. His first was a 15-yard run with 4:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Ludlowe did some good things on offense with senior tri-captain quarterback Tom Hammons completing a few passes up the middle. Hammons threw mostly to juniors Ryan Moore and Tom Fernandes and marched the Falcons to the Wrecker 19. However, Staples' defense didn't break and Ludlowe had to settle for a field goal, which senior Chris Kennedy drilled from 36 yards to make it 7-3.

The Falcons had a chance to take the lead after recovering a fumble on the Wrecker 12. Hammons got a first down on the Staples 1 but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Ludlowe moved the ball back to the 16 yard line. On the next play, Jacobs intercepted it in the end zone.

Two plays later, Jacobs scored on a 71-yard run to make it 14-3 after Mawicke's kick with 4:34 to go in the half, which was the halftime score.

Jacobs set up the Wreckers' next score with a 10-yard interception return to the Falcon 30.

Junior Jon Heil followed with a 26-yard run and Jacobs sealed the deal with a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:11 left in the third quarter.

The underdog Falcons weren't out of it as Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for the touchdown. Anderson's kick made it 21-10.

Staples junior Robbie Wolf set up the next score with an interception and seven-yard return to the Ludlowe 18. On the next play, freshman quarterback Jack Massie threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior quint-captain Patrick Murray. Mawicke's kick made it 28-10.

Jacobs closed out the scoring with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. Mawicke's kick made it 35-10. Senior captain Chris Coyne and classmate Robby Herman also had interceptions for the Wreckers.
