The Wakeman Boys & Girls Club's pre-teen character and leadership program has received a national award for excellence in organizing social and recreational events for club members.

The group was given a Torch Award from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Staples Foundation for Learning. The award included a $2,500 cash prize.

Members of the program are ages 11 to 13. They organized six social/recreational events over the course of the program year for club members in grades one through six. Those events impacted 360 children, the Wakeman Club said.

Events included dodgeball, kickball and game-room tournaments, plus a dance and other events. The goal of each was to provide an outlet for children to have fun, meet new people and promote healthy habits year round.
