FAIRFIELD -- The Fairfield Warde football team believes it is finally turning the corner. The Mustangs are picking the perfect time to do so, too.
Warde forced six turnovers, including a pair of interceptions each from Devon Lofton and Maxx Garrett, as the Mustangs blasted St. Joseph 28-6 on Friday night at Tetreau/Davis Field.
"We played solid," Warde coach Duncan DellaVolpe said. "We're finally getting to the point where we're playing and the kids see things we want them to."
Dario Pugliano picked off a pass and took it for a touchdown and Lofton ran for two scores as the Mustangs won for the second straight week, entering a showdown at 5-0 Staples next week in Westport.
St. Joseph's Jon Prutting intercepted a pass and took it 47 yards for the Cadets' lone score, giving St. Joseph (1-6) a 6-0 lead.
"We don't make plays," St. Joseph coach Joe Della Vecchia said. "There's no other way to say it."
Prutting's pick appeared to shake the sleeping Mustangs.
"I think it was a wake-up call," Warde quarterback Chris Foley said. "We came into the game thinking we could beat these guys and we got hit in the mouth."
Warde went 58 yards in 11 plays capped by Lofton's 9-yard run that tied the score at 6.
Two plays later, Foley hit Dario Pugliano from four yards out to give the Mustangs a 14-6 advantage.
After a St. Joseph three-and-out, Lofton bolted 56 yards for a touchdown to put the Mustangs up 21-6. All three Warde scores came within 3:27.
Warde intercepted Vazzano twice in the second half and Garrett intercepted running back Mike Pulaski on a trick play in the end zone to thwart the Cadets' lone sustained second-half drive.
