FAIRFIELD — Just hours before a man was struck and killed by a Metro-North train Thursday morning, police were able to avert a similar tragedy.

Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, police got a call about a woman walking westbound on the tracks. They notified Metro-North and train traffic was halted while they searched the tracks. Anne Arnold, 49, of Cranbury Road, Norwalk, was located on the tracks behind Dairy Queen.

According to the police report, Arnold said her car had run out of gas, and she left it at the downtown train station and was walking home. MetroNorth police charged Arnold with trespassing, according to the report.
