A Ridgefield woman told police Monday that credit cards were stolen from her purse that she had inadvertently left behind in a cab she hired in Fairfield.

According to police, the woman fell asleep on an eastbound Metro-North train on Jan. 14 and missed her stop in Norwalk. She got off at the downtown Fairfield station and planned to take a cab home to Ridgefield.

When she got in the cab, the woman told police, she realized she had no cash to pay the fare and left her purse in the cab while she went into the station's waiting area to use the ATM.

She said she didn't discover the missing cards until later when she began receiving unauthorized charges at Stop & Shop, the Fairfield Motor Inn, Kohl's, CVS, Duchess restaurant and a Jamaica, N.Y., gas station. The charges totalled $1,230.

The case is under investigation.
