For the first time since Hurricane Sandy's onslaught last week, mail deliveries will resume in Fairfield's hard-hit flood evacuation zones, south of Edward Street, as of Wednesday.

Residents of the area should contact the U.S. Postal Service if they want their mail to continue to be held.

The checkpoints for entry into the zone south of Edward Street will remain in effect through Saturday, town officials said Tuesday.

Passes for residents of the beach neighborhood and their contractors are being distributed -- with proof of residency -- at the command post in Veterans Park on Reef Road.
