FAIRFIELD — If rain boosts a fisherman’s luck, as the saying goes, then young anglers hooked a great day Saturday for the Fairfield Police Athletic League Trout Fishing Derby at Gould Manor Park.

The day’s chilly rains brought out a crowd of about 100 people trying their luck at the annual event.

Huddling beneath umbrellas and dressed in rain gear and hats, the youngsters and parents lined the edge of the pond in hopes of landing one of the more than 360 trout stocked there. Coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts were available to fortify the gathering against the un-springlike elements.

Prizes were awarded in various categories to the youngsters, such as first fish caught and longest fish. Funds raised support Fairfield PAL programs.
