PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — Officials say an audit performed after the November election uncovered a possible case of voter fraud in Portsmouth.
The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1SBeIbn ) Town Registrar Jacqueline Schulz confirmed on Wednesday a potential irregularity was discovered. She says an investigation is necessary.
Schulz declined to elaborate on the nature of the possible fraud. The person responsible for the ballot hasn't been notified.
Schulz says the town's Board of Canvassers will name that voter on Friday. The board can authorize Schulz to file a police report, among other actions.
The state's interim director of elections says they're aware of the irregularity. He says they don't know of any others in the state.
Republican President-elect Donald Trump previously tweeted that he would've won the popular vote if millions hadn't voted unlawfully.
