AARP has a team of trained tax counselors available at the Fairfield Senior Center to help senior citizens with limited incomes prepared their 2013 tax returns.

Free, one-on-one assistance is available by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the senior center, 100 Mona Terrace. Appointments may be made by calling the senior center at 203-256-3166.

The tax counselors in the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program have completed IRS training and are certified to prepare tax returns for seniors with limited incomes, including sole-proprietor small businesses with no inventory.

The volunteers do not prepare more complex returns involving owned rental property, taxpayers who have filed personal bankruptcy or owners of other businesses.

A return is prepared with the taxpayer present, and the program's goal is to complete it in a single appointment, according to Robert Gruber, coordinator of the service in Fairfield.
