On the Market: A Swiss chalet in Fairfield County

DARIEN — More often than not people associate a Swiss chalet with the Alps or other mountainous and snowy regions of the world rather than picturing it in a coastal community.
With the amount of snow that fell on Connecticut recently the Swiss chalet at 50 Sunswyck Road might as well be in the Alps. Instead it sits in the private enclave of Delafield Island not far from Scott’s Cove and Long Island Sound. In fact, there are seasonal glimpses of the cove from the kitchen and sun room on the first floor and the master bedroom suite on the second floor. Another body of water - a small stream, courses through the back part of the property.
This house is tucked away on a 1.56-acre level and sloping property on the portion of Sunswyck Road that ends in a cul-de-sac. Another portion of the road empties into Raiders Lane and Tory Hole Road. At the other end it originates at Goodwives River Road. Its location protects the house from thru traffic making it a very quiet setting. A winding white pebble path leads from the ample driveway up a stone path on the wooded property passed outcroppings of large rocks and to the stairs that travel to the front door. A long covered front balcony provides a place to sit, relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Inside, there is a rustic yet elegant charm, which is enhanced by hand-hewn beams in the living room, cerused pine paneling in the dining room, and the hand-painted floral-themed mural on the white ceramic tile backsplash above the stove top in the kitchen.
The house was built in 1956. It was subsequently renovated. It has 2,800 square feet of living space and an open floor plan. The entrance foyer has a wide-planked and pegged wood floor and a half bath with a marble floor. In the living room there is wall-to-wall carpeting and a red brick fireplace flanked by two built-in cabinets. As in the dining room the walls are paneled with bleached pine. In the dining room the walls are angled and there are two built-in china cabinets that are hidden in the walls.
The kitchen features a white ceramic tile floor, double stainless sinks, Jenn-Air five-burner range top, GE double ovens, Sub-Zero refrigerator, and pine cabinetry. There are several counter areas including one that juts out like a peninsula to separate the kitchen from the family room. It has the same ceramic tile floor and a wall of built-in shelving.

On the opposite side of the kitchen there is a sliding door to the large sun room, which has an oak hardwood floor, cathedral ceiling, three walls of windows, and two skylights. A door leads to stairs that access the yard.
On the second floor the master suite includes a wide hallway with multiple closets, a full bath with white ceramic subway tile floor and lower walls, a good-size bedroom and a smaller bedroom that can serve as a nursery or as an office.
The finished lower level contains two more bedrooms, both with wall-to-wall carpeting. There is also a laundry room with a utility sink, and a full bath with off-white ceramic tile on the floor and the lower walls.
In addition to its proximity to Long Island Sound this house is also close to downtown shops and restaurants and the Metro North train station. The train is just over a mile away. The Noroton Heights train station is only 1.5 miles away.
