Life's a beach for the residents of the Colonial Contemporary house at 109 Baldwin Terrace, and not just for the summer season, but year-round.
This house is in an ideal location on the corner of Craig Court, steps from Jennings Beach in one direction and South Benson Marina in the other. It sits within minutes of downtown and the center train station. It is also walking distance to the main Fairfield Public Library, YMCA, Fairfield Museum and History Center, shopping and restaurants. This is also a walk-to-school district with younger children attending nearby Roger Sherman Elementary School.
The residents of this neighborhood say this street is quieter than most other local roadways, where there are rental properties, double parking and traffic to the beach. It also has all the benefits of proximity to the water without the risks. Baldwin Terrace has a higher elevation than some other local streets so when Superstorm Sandy roared through in October 2012, the storm waters surged only into some garages and crawl spaces, not into the houses.
This house was built in 1954 as a ranch. A subsequent renovation added a second floor and gave it an open floor plan more suited to modern-day living. Then again, modern-day life can be fast-paced and stressful. This house provides a relaxing place where residents can sit on the long, covered front porch to enjoy water views and people-watching.
The current owners made a number of improvements, including the addition of a new roof in 2004, updating the kitchen in 2009, installing a new lawn and flower beds in 2012, and painting the interior and exterior that same year. There are new windows that tilt out for easy cleaning.
Ample off-street parking is available in front of the house, where a pebble area has space for about four cars.
A Shaker-style front door with nine windows opens to the 2,400-square-foot house, where the living room has a refinished oak hardwood floor.
There is a dining area with a dry bar in the kitchen but in that same area of the house there is a den that could be converted into a formal dining room if necessary. The den has built-in shelving and French doors to the front porch.
In the kitchen there are natural oak cabinets and granite counters. Over the deep, under-counter mount stainless sink there is a "greenhouse" window. Glass doors lead to the wood deck, stone patio and fenced yard. A generator is housed in the storage shed.
There are two bedrooms on the first floor that share a hall bath. The main staircase leads to the second floor and the master bedroom in a private wing with a vaulted ceiling, wall-to-wall carpeting, full bath, dressing area with three closets and ocean views.
Also on the second floor is a front-to-back great room accessed from the master bedroom or a rear staircase. A front-to back attic with pull-down stairs could be finished to create additional living space.
