On the market: Home maintains charm with array of updates

The Southport section of Fairfield is known for its maritime heritage and charming antique houses. And while those 18th and 19th century gems will always hold a special place in the heart of the village there are some changes to the landscape with new construction and updated 20th Century homes.
One example is the Colonial beauty at 200 Taintor Drive. It was built in 1975, but was updated and expanded recently, which allows it to be rooted in the 20th Century while meeting the needs of the modern family. This house has seven rooms on the main level including a music room and a his-and-hers office that adjoins a large playroom giving parents a chance to work and keep an eye on children. It is a child-friendly neighborhood street where children run and play from yard to yard.
Its convenient location places the house within easy walking distance of Southport’s amenities. Take a leisurely stroll along Southport Harbor, shop in Southport Village, commute to New York via the nearby Metro-North train, visit the Pequot Library to read or attend its many programs, or walk to the local athletic club. Then again, the house has its own gym in the finished walk-out basement. The gym has a rubberized floor and a mirrored wall.
The house is positioned on a half-acre level and sloping property. The backyard is tiered to create play spaces and there is a play set that will remain. The garden beds lining the front of the house feature holly bushes. The front door and garage’s carriage-style door are both mahogany.

When the house was re-imagined the designer and builder gave it great exposure; natural light floods the house from numerous windows and skylights. They also considered every space within the 3,050 square feet, ingeniously using the area with a number of built-ins and well-organized places. The house was also given unusual moldings, artistic touches and custom appointments in every room.
The formal living room features a fireplace with an imported dark emperador marble surround and white wood mantel. The music room, which is open to the living room, has wainscoting on all but the upper-most portion of the walls. French doors separate the music room from the family room, which has a vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, wet bar, one exposed white brick wall and an attractive art installation of walnut wood panels above the red brick fireplace. The wet bar has a wood butcher block counter, upper and lower cabinets and a beverage refrigerator.
Another set of French doors separates the family room from the office, which has two built-in desk areas and cabinets. The spacious playroom has a long wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets and desks to serve as a computer or homework area. This room opens to the great room and kitchen. The great room has terra cotta tile flooring, bay window flanked by built-in shelves and sliding door to the large Trex deck/balcony.
