An antique Colonial house at 1100 Pequot Ave. has seen nearly a century of local history and provided a comfortable residence for several prominent families in the Southport section of Fairfield. And yet, this house has never been on the sales market, until now.
Since notable local architect Cameron Clark built the house in 1924 it has always been sold directly, so this is a rare opportunity to purchase and live in prime Southport real estate.
The house sits on a 2.79-acre level property, one of the largest lots in the neighborhood. It is set well back from the road, which optimizes privacy. Southport Harbor is within walking distance. Southport Village, the Pequot Library and the Southport train station are also in proximity to the house.
The long paved driveway, bordered with Belgian block on one side, provides ample parking for guests, which enhances its appeal as a place to entertain. It has a large, open front lawn and in the backyard there is a bluestone patio with red brick walls, a heated, in-ground swimming pool and pergola. There is also a guest house, which provides a legal rental opportunity on the second floor. The first floor is used as the pool house. It has a total of 1,800 square feet of living space.
There are interesting architectural details throughout the main house and they are evident right from the front façade. The exterior of the pale yellow house does not have clapboard but rather flush-board and white, fluted columns that are almost but not quite flush which the façade. The shutters are sage green and there is dentil molding just under the roofline. Even the path that leads to the front door is unusual. One section of the bluestone walkway has a large, inlaid circle of red brick.
A decorative millwork arch frames the front entrance, which also has attractive sidelights and a transom of leaded glass. The transom opens to allow a gentle breeze into the large center hall foyer. A door at the rear of the foyer also has a transom.
Inside the 5,421-square-foot house, there is a unifying theme in the millwork. The fluted columns of the façade are repeated in the foyer and the mantle of the wide brick fireplace in the living room. There is chair railing in the foyer, living room and the banquet-sized dining room. French doors in the living room lead into a large screened porch.
The family room features a box bay window, which is typical of Cameron Clark construction, and built-in shelving framed in the same fluted columns as seen elsewhere.
Features in the spacious kitchen include a honed granite floor, Carrera marble countertops, marble backsplash, a huge trapezoidal-shaped center island with a breakfast bar for four, pot-filler over the range, eat-in area and a built-in desk area. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator, commercial Thermador six-burner range and hood, and Bosch dishwasher.
Off the kitchen is the mudroom, which has a polished granite floor and built-in kennel. Also in this area of the house are the laundry room, storage closet and half bath.
Upstairs, the master bedroom suite has a dressing room with organizers, door to a balcony above the first floor screened porch, and a marble master bath. There are three other bedrooms on this floor, all en suite, and a fifth bedroom on the third floor.
The guest house/pool house has three sets of French doors to a terrace with a red brick seating wall. On the first floor there is a kitchenette, living room, full bathroom and laundry. The second floor has a living room, full bath, kitchen, and separate entrance.
