While many people will be celebrating Christmas on Dec. 25, the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club will observe its 101st birthday. It opened as the Wakeman Boys Club on Christmas Day in 1913 in a stately red brick structure facing Southport Harbor.

Years later, the 5,664-square-foot antique Colonial at 648 Harbor Road was transformed into a private residence by notable local architect Cameron Clark. The structure, one of the most iconic in Southport Village, is currently on the market. The stately red brick residence has panoramic views of the harbor, Pequot Yacht Club, the Country Club of Fairfield golf course and Long Island Sound. Oversized double-hung windows optimize the views.

Construction began in 1911 for the waterfront Wakeman Boys Club building, which sits on a 0.51-acre level and sloping property, a good size for Southport Village. The landscaping and mature trees create a private setting, although that privacy is shared on occasion with the public. The current owners are avid gardeners and their beautiful grounds often are featured on garden club tours.

The detailing on the front façade offers a hint of the surprises inside. A tall red brick wall lines the front of the property and flanks the wide staircase to the front door. The house has white shutters and decorative molding crowning each window, dentil molding and a faux balcony over the colonnaded, covered front entrance. The door is flanked by sidelights and topped by a decorative arched transom.

An extensive renovation, years later, preserved many of the house's original details while enhancing modern conveniences. The original terrazzo flooring in the grand entrance foyer and several other rooms on the first floor remains.

What had been a nearly half-size interior basketball court during the Wakeman days is now the family room. It features a floor-to-ceiling wall of stone, which houses a fireplace and a domed skylight. This room provides access to a solarium -- a greenhouse-like sunroom. The solarium, the bathrooms and the kitchen all have radiant heat flooring.

The house also has handicap-accessible features: An elevator that goes from the lower level to the third floor loft and a chair lift.

There are four fireplaces in the house, each one different. In addition to the stone fireplace of the family room, there is a Federal-style decorative wood mantel in the formal dining room; an ornate Rococo-style, hand-carved marble mantel in the formal living room, and the fireplace in the master bedroom has an onyx surround.

The redesigned and updated kitchen has a butler's pantry, Calacatta Gold marble counters, center island with a dark granite counter, white subway tile backsplash, Viking Professional size-burner range and grill, and a pot-filler.

Also on the first floor is a sizable screened porch, accessed through the formal dining room, with water views.
