The architect for the Nantucket-style Colonial house at 263 Lalley Boulevard may have found inspiration for his design at nearby Penfield Beach, the site of an annual sandcastle competition.
This 3,400-square-foot house, within easy walking distance to Penfield Beach, has a turret giving it the look of a storybook castle. The house awaits its next family to start living their happily ever after.
When it was built in 2006 another unusual feature was added -- this one a nod to its proximity to Long Island Sound. There is a compass rose inlaid in the foyer floor of the turret.
This house has other unusual features, the first of which is its abundant off-street parking; a luxury for those who live close to the water. The paved driveway and parking area, lined in Belgian block, has room for four cars. There is room for one more car outside the fenced area, but still off street. And then there is an attached, under-house, two-car garage.
A slate path and quarried stone and slate steps lead to the front door on the second story, which is the main living level of the house. The rounded walls of the turret combine with the curved interior staircase to create a graceful transitional space. Located in this part of the house is a half bath with a decorative tile sunburst on the floor and a large mudroom with lots of closet space and built-in benches with underneath storage.
The main level comprises an open floor plan of the great room which includes the gourmet kitchen with a casual eat-in area, a formal dining area with a dry serving bar, beverage refrigerator and built-in wine rack, and a family room. In another nod to the ocean the kitchen backsplash of marble and glass is made to resemble the mother of pearl found in some seashells. Other kitchen features include granite counters, a center island with a prep sink and large pantry.
The family room has a floor-to-ceiling river rock fireplace that is flanked by doors to the enclosed backyard.
On the second floor, the large master bedroom suite has a gas-fueled fireplace, four closets, deep tray ceiling, and a master bath with Travertine floor, triangular jetted tub, his and hers vanities, and walk-in shower. The bed and bath areas are separated by French doors.
There are two other bedrooms on this level. Both are en suite and have a door to access a large balcony that looks over the backyard. On the third floor there is a large landing that is big enough to use as an office, homework space or play area. The guest bedroom on this level also has its own full bath and balcony.
This house is ideal for those who love the beach but also want the convenience of easy commuting. It is walking distance to the downtown Fairfield train station, shops, restaurants, library and other amenities.
