Three Fairfield Prep seniors combined to win four events Sunday at the SCC West indoor track and field sectional championships at the New Haven Athletic Center, helping the Jesuits, with 62 points, to place fourth among nine teams. Three of those first-place performances by Prep runners set meet records.
Hamden (108.33) won the team competition, with Xavier (90) placing second and Branford (76.33) third.
Christian Alvarado, the State Open cross country champion who was runner-up at the Northeast Championships, won the 1,600 and 3,200 (metric mile and two-mile) in meet-record-setting times. James Mulliken won the 1,000-meter run and Adam Vare finished first in the 600.
Alvarado had set the SCC West record in the 1,600 last January with a time of 4 minutes and 31.22 seconds. His time on Sunday was 4:26.85, an improvement of 4.37 seconds over his previous record. Jesuits junior Paul Cashman placed sixth in 4:57.91 in the event.
Alvarado won the 3,200 in 9:24.46, lowering the meet standard he set last year (9:33.04) by 8.58 seconds. Prep junior Andy Thane was fifth in the 3,200 in 10:20.17 and senior Matthew Scholl (10:28.33) took sixth.
Mulliken won the 1,000 in 2:41.87, and Vare earned the gold medal in the 600 in 1:26.10. Vare's time was a meet record by 0.58 of a second.
Jesuits senior Simon Whiteman placed third in the 55-meter dash in 6.8 seconds.
The SCC Championship meet is Thursday at 3 p.m. in New Haven.
