BRISTOL — Fairfield’s Little League softball team worked 14 walks and Brittany Romero and Maddie Russell combined to pitch a no-hitter in a dominant 15-0, mercy-rule win over Jesse Berkett-Massachusetts at Breen Field on Tuesday.

The four-inning win clinched the No. 1 seed for Fairfield in the Eastern Regional quarterfinals. The team will face No. 4 seed Maryland Wednesday night at 8.

Russell went 2-for-2 and drew two walks for Fairfield and also pitched two innings.

Fairfield scored six runs in the top of the first by working counts. Six of the first nine batters drew walks as the team batted around.

“We’re just taught not to swing at any (pitch) and to be selective about what we swing at,” Russell said.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts could get little going offensively.

“When I’m pitching, I just have complete trust in myself because I’ve done it before,” Romero said before slapping hands with Russell.

Massachussets coach Craig Sylvester spoke about his team’s struggles.

“We just couldn’t find the strike zone,” he said. “They all struggled with their control a little bit today and we just couldn’t get the bats going.”

Fairfield had six hits total and was aided by four Massachussets errors.

“It’s just one game at a time,” Fairfield coach Jarry Rasmussen said.

He spoke about today’s opponent, Maryland.

“We’ve seen Maryland here and even though they may be a four seed, they’re dangerous,” he said.
