But if one game is any indication, Prep may have a fun 2012 season.
The Jesuits scored 20 points off six turnovers and rolled to a 47-0 win over Wilbur Cross on Friday afternoon.
"This is what we had to do," Shea said. "We kept pressing and playing hard ... we did what we had to do and we're happy with the result."
Sophomore John Moten rushed for two scores and quarterback Strecker Backe threw and ran for a score as Prep started 1-0 for the first time since 2008 -- and for the first time in Shea's three years as varsity head coach.
"It was a lot of fun," Backe said. "This is what we hoped for."
Prep will try to improve to 2-0 when it hosts East Haven next Friday at 6 p.m. Senior running backs Dillon Ryan, Chris Golger and Chris Pruden each rushed for touchdowns.
"These are guys that can all make plays," Shea said. "Hopefully they can continue to make some plays."
Prep built a 12-0 lead on two first-quarter scores, but had its next three drives thwarted -- two from turnovers-- inspiring Wilbur Cross coach John Acquavita late in the first half.
"At 12-0, we're playing pretty good D ... and who knows what happens," Acquavita said.
But after lining up in punt formation on fourth-and-two from his own 27-yard-line, Governors punter Ysaan Frazier tried to run for the first down, falling four yards shy.
"He made a bad mistake, decided to be a hero and thought of himself," Acquavita said. "All the adrenaline sank and it never really came back."
Prep took the ball 25 yards in three plays, capped by Backe's 1-yard touchdown run just 39 seconds before halftime. Ryan's two-point conversion made it 20-0.
"I said `this is a big drive, we've got to score points so we get a big lead before half,'" Backe said.
After Prep sophomore Colton Smith intercepted Governors quarterback A.J. Consiglio on Wilbur Cross' next offensive play, Backe hit John Delasanti for a 38-yard-score, boosting Prep's lead to 28-0 with just 23 seconds left.
"It's a lot of fun to make a big throw and throw a touchdown," Backe said. "When other teams make mistakes, we like to capitalize on them."
Ryan and Moten each recorded rushing touchdowns on Prep's first two second-half drives. The Jesuits recorded four touchdowns in only 3:05 of elapsed time.
"Any points right out of half is great," Ryan said. "Pushing up the score shuts them down a little bit."
