TRUMBULL -- Entering on a two-game losing streak, the Fairfield Warde girls soccer team deemed its game at undefeated Trumbull Thursday night as extremely important.
When Katie Brennan and the Mustangs' stingy defense left McDougall Stadium, Warde was no longer on a losing slide and the Eagles weren't unbeaten.
Warde's junior keeper stopped 10 shots and freshman Jenn Maldenado scored the game's only goal as the Mustangs beat Trumbull 1-0.
"I think it was a really good team effort," Brennan said. "I think we did what we had to do."
The Mustangs improved to 8-2-2, holding the high-powered Trumbull offense without a goal for the first game this season.
"It's great to be the team to break that streak," Warde captain Emily Pullen said. "It's a great feeling."
Eagles goalkeeper Alanna Lynch stopped six shots.
"It's a tough loss," Trumbull coach Daniel Uhrlass said. "We knew Warde was very good ... they got the big goal, great job on their effort. We had some chances, we just couldn't put it away."
The Eagles outshot Warde and had higher quality chances for much of the game's first 10 minutes. Brennan robbed Trumbull's Marissa Piccolo twice in the first six minutes, then stopped Lauren Hyde in the ninth.
"We came out flat," Warde coach Tom Cunningham said. "We gave up chances, but we've said it time and time again those girls in the back ... they all support one another ... and Katie Brennan made a lot of big plays for us tonight."
Warde tilted the field in the second and found the goal in the 65th minute. Caitlin O'Brien's throw-in found Maldenado on the right wing and the freshman outside-wing floated a shot over Lynch and off the inside of the post putting the Mustangs up 1-0.
"We've seen from day one that (Maldenado) has the technical ability and composure to be that type of player," Cunningham said. "She's only 12 games into her varsity career, but she's going to be a good player."
Hyde and Taylor Pratcher each had stellar offensive chances in the final 10 minutes, but Hyde's shot attempt sailed over the goal. Pratcher's header drifted wide.
"We had a few good shots, but nothing point-blank," Uhrlass said. "They didn't let us in there behind them."
