By defeating Pomperaug and Hand on Feb. 6 at Mount Southington, the Fairfield co-op girls skiing team stayed undefeated in the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League after four races this season. Fairfield, the 2013 state champions, is 17-0.

The boys team, which won the state title last winter, beat Berlin, Pomperaug and Hand. Their record, after a slow start in the first two CISL races in January, improved to 14-7. Fairfield was scheduled to meet Guilford, Darien and Southington on Thursday in Southington, with the girls also facing New Canaan.

Fairfield's boys scored 294.14 from the two completed runs by six skiers. Berlin mixed was disqualified, for not having six racers each completing two runs, and Pomperaug scored 313.54. Matt Chan was Fairfield's fastest racer, finishing ninth overall among the 94 scoring racers, with a combined time of 47.18. Next fastest was Davey Hawthorne (47.88), who placed 16th overall, followed by Zach Finzi (47.92) who was 18th overall; Kevin Mercado (49.52) 38th; Ben Schwinn (50.8) 44th; and Kelton Engemann (50.84) tied for 45th.

The girls placed all six of their racers in the top 22 overall. Fairfield's score was 302.01, with Hand at 322.58 and Pomperaug 365.74. Sarah Mason, for the fourth race this season, was Fairfield's highest finisher. She was second overall in 48.84. Her fastest teammate was Sydney Burton (49.13), who was fifth overall. Following her were Megan O'Hare (49.64), who was seventh overall; Kaylie Minogoe (50.4) 15th; Lauren Craighead (51.88) 21st; and Flossie Dewar (52.12) 22nd. Seventy-four racers each completed two runs.

"The girls team is in great shape moving into the final race," coach Gary Quiricone said. "The boys team continues to surge late in the season with some great finishes." He noted that Chan's performance was his best finish of the season.

"Sarah has consistently finished in the top spots all season," Quiricone said.

Eastern Championships

Mason qualified seventh on Feb. 4 for the Connecticut team to compete March 14-17 in the Eastern High School Championship races at Attitash Ski Area in Bartlett, NH.

Sam Cusick, of Fairfield Prep, qualified in fourth place for the boys, with Colby Gardner, of Hopkins, qualifying 10th. All three qualifiers are from Fairfield.

The qualifying at Mount Southington, over two days, includes slalom and Giant Slalom competition. The fastest two runs of three in slalom and Giant Slalom counted for overall score.
