Fairfield University extended men's basketball coach Sydney Johnson's contract through the 2018-19 season on Wednesday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Johnson's original deal before last season at Fairfield was also not reported, but believed to be either a four- or five-year deal.
Johnson, who previously was the head coach at Princeton, has Fairfield off to a 4-4 start this season. The Stags play their home and MAAC opener Friday at Webster Bank Arena against Canisius. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
Johnson said Wednesday afternoon by phone that he looked forward to continuing to build a championship-caliber program at Fairfield. The Stags already have two recruits in place for next season from the 2012 class in small forward Steve Smith and guard Doug Chappell, plus guard Lincoln Davis, who is at prep school in New Hampshire. Also, Seton Hall transfer Sean Grennan will be eligible.
Last season under Johnson, the Stags reached the MAAC tournament final, the CollegeInsider.com Tournament semifinals, and defeated Arizona State, Old Dominion and Iona in a 22-win season.
