Fairfield overcame several fielding miscues and a late-game deficit to pull out a wild 6-4 extra inning win over host Westport in Senior Legion action on Tuesday night. Fairfield improved 6-17 and Westport fell to 4-15.

In fact, the visitors were down to their final out before mounting a rally at Staples High School's field. Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Fairfield evened the score when Jay Sullivan (3-for-4) came through with a two-out, two-run single to force extra innings. Tom Luckner had the decisive hit, a two-run single in the eighth, to plate Darino Pugliano and Steve Zadravec with the winning and insurance runs.

Zadravec also hit his first home run to spark the offense. Fairfield made an overflowing handful of fielding miscues to open the door for Westport to scratch out its runs, something that didn't sit well with its coach, Jon Servilla, who said it felt almost as if the team lost this game despite the winning outcome.

Servilla was thrilled that his team put together a late-game comeback in dramatic fashion, but points out that the late-game heroics would not have been necessary with a more solid performance in the field. "It was pretty exciting but, at the same time, it shows we have a lot to work on," he said. "We had a rough game."

Fairfield in the midst of a busy part of the game schedule, called upon non-regular pitchers to take the mound in this game. Pete Deitrik started and went five innings, and Steve Brunetti pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth to lock down the team's victory.

Servilla was pleased with the efforts of his fielders-turned-hurlers, and with the offense. "Our hitting really kept us in the ball game today," the coach said. "Today was one of our better hitting performances."
