The Fairfield Prep ice hockey team is rolling.
But that doesn't mean the Jesuits' coach is happy with the way they are playing.
Matt Beck's 33 saves led the second-ranked Jesuits to a 3-1 victory over the state's No. 1 team, Notre Dame-West Haven, on Saturday at Bennett Rink.
"Matty was spectacular," Prep coach Matt Sather said. "I thought he was definitely the difference in the game."
Prep was able to deal the Green Knights their first loss, even without its best effort, according to Sather.
"I didn't think we had our best legs today," Sather said. "I thought Notre Dame had more scoring chances."
Darren Capobianco scored for ND (7-1), and Luc Amatruda stopped 30 shots.
Beck proved to be the difference-maker, especially in the first period. The junior goalie stymied Green Knights center Kyle Thibault's first-period breakaway, keeping the Jesuits up 1-0 four minutes in.
"I kind of slid over and fortunately was in a position to make the save," Beck said. "I thought making that save gave our team life. I knew if I didn't make that save, it could've been 1-1, and it could've been a lot different."
"He made some good saves," ND coach Bill Gerosa said. "We didn't capitalize on some of the chances we had."
Beck also made two stellar glove saves on ND's Greg Zullo, including one with just five seconds left in the first.
"I thought we made him look good with our high shots and glove shots," Gerosa said. "That really upsets the coach when they shoot it into his chest and glove like that."
"They had four point-blank opportunities and a breakaway," Sather said. "I thought the edge was theirs."
Wikman put Prep ahead with a power-play goal at 3:11. The junior forward's initial shot was stopped, but he beat Amatruda with the rebound, putting the Jesuits up 1-0.
"It was big," Wikman said. "I definitely wanted to spark the team."
"His goal was great," Sather said. "It was a hard-working goal."
After Henry made it 2-0, Wikman set up the Jesuits' third goal at 9:45, when he walked down the goal line and passed the puck to Lockery at the net-mouth. Lockery beat Amatruda, putting Prep up 3-0.
"We definitely wanted to get something started," Wikman said of his line. "We wanted to move the puck and skate."
Beck and Prep held ND off the board until late in the second, when Capobianco's wrist-shot found the net, cutting the Jesuits' lead to 3-1.
"The shot came from the point and there were two or three guys in front of me," Beck said. "I couldn't really see it. I would've liked to have it, but it is what it is."
But Prep's third-period possession pinned the Green Knights in their own defensive end. Beck also made 12 third-period saves.
"I liked some of our puck possession in the third," Sather said.
