Ludlowe's Kindel qualifies for New England gymnastics meet

NEW MILFORD -- Trumbull was the only high school not to qualify for the New England Championships team competition next Saturday in Massachusetts when it placed last of four schools at the CIAC State Open Saturday at New Milford High School.
The Eagles, who won the FCIAC Championship and placed second at the Class L meet, finished fourth with a team score of 135.425, missing third place, which went to Class L title-winner Southington (137.65), by 2.25 points. Woodstock Academy won its third straight State Open team championship with a score of 152.5. Hand was runner-up with 142.7. The Eagles placed fourth on the uneven parallel bars and balance beam, but were third on the floor.
Woodstock Academy, which repeated in Class S after winning Class M in 2012, won all four events. The Centaurs, from the ECC, had four of the top 6 finishers in the all-around competition for all four events. Freshman Paige Stuyniski, who set a meet record on the balance beam with a 9.85, won the all-around with a 38.35. Teammate Grace Logan (37.825), a ninth-grader, was runner-up; senior Courtney Osborn (37.25) was fourth; and senior Bree Husong (36.9) was sixth.
Trumbull's Linda McAuley, the FCIAC champion, was eighth in the all-around with a 36.525. McAuley qualified for the New Englands in three events by placing fourth on the vault, with a 9.325, tied for fifth on beam (9.1) and sixth on the floor exercise (9.3).
"Linda definitely did not have her best day," Trumbull coach Celina Huber said of her senior who had ankle surgery last year. "This season she has been coming back from that. She had issues along the way. She had to miss some meets in the regular season."
A fall on the bars, Huber said, prevented McAuley from qualifying on the bars and placing higher in the all-around.
Fairfield Ludlowe junior Perry Kindel, the FCIAC all-around runner-up last month and the 2013 conference champion, qualified for the New Englands on the beam with a 9.2. That placed Kindel, the first Falcons' gymnast to reach the New England Championships, in a three-way tie for third. Her 35.9 all-around ranked her 13th; she was seeded 17th of 20 qualifiers in the all-around.
"That's fantastic for her," said coach Kim Longobucco, of Ludlowe, which was third in Class L on March 1. "She had a really good meet today."
Kindel, whose goal was to qualify for the New Englands, dislocated her thumb around a month ago, Lonogbucco said, and the injury has limited her performances in the bars and beam. "Thirteenth is fantastic (in the all-around) for coming off that injury."
The only other regional gymnast to make the grade for the New Englands was Shelton senior Meghan French, who was 11th in the all-around (36.150), qualifying on beam (9.15) in which she was fourth, and on floor (9.35), where she was fifth. Her junior teammate Julia Lindberg (9.175) tied for seventh on vault.
"My goal today was to enjoy the meet because it was my last State Open," French said. "I'm really pleased. It was my goal to make it (New Englands) on beam and floor."
Senior Alison Profeta, of New Miford, was 20th in the all-around (34.9) and 13th on bars (8.95). Newtown senior Elisha Wilson (8.8) tied for 10th on the beam, along with Greenwich freshman Jessica Freiheit. Wilson (8.75) was 18th on floor.
