Milestones for Warde wrestlers

The Fairfield Warde wrestling team achieved a pair of milestones on Saturday in defeating four opponents at Wilton. Mustang senior Dylan Bender earned his 100th career victory and head coach Jason Shaughnessy, who had coached the Fairfield High School team up until 2005, got career win No. 300.

Warde, ranked No. 4 in the state poll, defeated Shelton by 55-12, Bridgeport Central 75-6, Harding 72-3 and host Wilton 63-9. The Mustangs improved their overall record this season to 5-0.

Eight Warde wrestlers won all four matches on Saturday -- Jack Price, at 106 pounds, Tim Kane (113 pounds), Dan Ebert (126), Aaron Beinstein (138), Bender (145), Colin Ventura (160), Mike Sheets (170) and Ahmed Hourani (285-plus) at heavyweight.

Bender's record now stands at 103-37. Shaughnessy is 302-77 since starting to coach at Fairfield High in 1997. Warde has three state championships in his term, winning in Class L in 2006, 2009 and 2010. The Mustangs won the FCIAC Championship in 2010. They have won the FCIAC East eight years in a row.

The Warde Invitatonal tourmament is Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, starting at 9:30 a.m. with weight-class finals scheduled to begin around 5 p.m.
