MILFORD -- The Notre Dame-Fairfield boys hockey team held on to an early lead to defeat New Milford 3-2 in an SWC game on Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion
The victory extended the Lancers' winning streak to five games.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead before the Green Wave clawed their way back to within one in the physical contest. The Lancers got their three goals in a span of just five minutes when Nick Carloto, Craig Hessenius and Taylor Chavez found the net.
New Milford coach Dan Moore talked about his team's slow start.
"We weren't ready, we weren't intense," Moore said. "We knew they were going to come out strong and fast and we just didn't elevate our game at the start."
Lancers coach Steve Hetherman was scratching his head when it came to what changed after their fast start.
"I don't know if anything changed," he said. "That's my question for the players. First period was some nice pressure, then I don't know."
New Milford pulled within one goal late in the second period when Tommy Nisco connected with the back of the net on an unassisted breakaway goal for his second of the game.
"He's a first-year player, a sophomore, he's learning more and more throughout the year," Moore said. "It comes with more high school experience. He's got nice hands and a good shot, obviously."
No one was able to break through and score again in the final period.
Hetherman said it was nice to leave with a win.
"It's nice to survive," he said. "It's always good to get a win."
Hetherman talked about the valuable things he learned from the game.
"We put some new boys out there who were performing well and gave them an opportunity to play tonight (Saturday)," he said. "We got a better understanding of where they are in their development. They fought."
The Lancers will play host to West Haven on Wednesday while New Milford travels to play Shepaug/Litchfield/Nonnewaug on Monday.
