Eaman Whelan, a sophomore, scored all three goals Monday afternoon to lead the New Fairfield boys soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame-Fairfield in a SWC match. He scored twice in the first half and once in the second to help the Rebels improve to 5-5-4 overall and 5-5-3 in the conference.
The Lancers dropped to 4-8-1 overall and in the SWC. They need two wins and a tie -- or three victories -- in their three remaining matches to qualify for the CIAC Class S state tournament.
Notre Dame played without sophomore Mathias Martinez, its leading goal scorer who was injured. Coach Whitey Budreckas had five freshmen in the starting lineup. Goalkeeper Kevin Franco made eight saves for the Lancers. Budreckas termed the Lancers' effort one of the worst of the season.
Notre Dame is 4-5-1 in its last 10 games after beginning 2013 with three straight losses. The four wins for the Lancers surpass the win toal of three combined from the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
