The No. 1 Fairfield Prep boys hockey team cruised to a 7-0 victory over No. 8 Hamden on Saturday at Webster Bank Arena, moving to 13-0 on the season.
Prep Matt Sather said the game was closer than the score indicated.
"I certainly don't think it was a 7-0 game," he said. "I think it was much closer than that, but we'll take it."
Lockery was key in the Jesuits' jumping out ahead early, breaking through to score two of Fairfield Prep's first three goals, both on power plays. He also had the assist on Prep's second goal scored by Kenny Kochiss.
"My line has been doing pretty good on the power play," Lockery said. "And on my first goal, all we did at practice was practice that back-door pass on the power play. My second goal, I just was able to get by the defender and I saw top left open and let it go."
Sather was surprised to see Lockery jumpstart the Jesuits' offense.
"He's a high energy player that we look to for that," he said. "He gave us a boost."
Prep scored five goals in the second and third periods and outshot Hamden 17-5 thanks to its defense and goalie Matt Beck (12 saves).
"Matty played great, especially in that first period," Sather said. "We were sluggish, no question about it and Hamden was energized, so we needed a couple huge saves from Matt. Our defensemen did a nice job in transition and they were aggressive when we needed them to be."
