Pioneers break through, win first men's hockey game of season

Finally, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team has broken through.

The Pioneers recorded their first win of the season Tuesday night over Holy Cross 7-3, as Ben Ketchum had two goals and an assist to lead the way at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Sacred Heart is 1-26-2 overall, 1-19-1 in American Hockey action. The Crusaders are 15-12-2, 11-9-2.

The Pioneers took an 1-0 lead just 56 seconds after the opening face-off with a goal by Ketchum. Neither team could lead by more than a goal until 9:19 of the third period, when Ketchum scored a power play goal to extend the lead to 5-3. Chad Filteau, who also scored SHU's fourth goal, then scored on a breakaway at 12:16 to make it 6-3. Ben Lake scored off a rebound for the final goal.

Andrew Bodnarchuk posted 33 saves for the Pioneers, who were outshot 36-31. Kyle Verbeek and Chad Barthelmess also had goals for the Pioneers.
