Fairfield Prep, which finished fourth in the 2013 CIAC Division I boys golf championships, was playing its second home match of the season on Thursday afternoon but was hosting its first competition on the traditional home course it shares with Fairfield Warde. The Jesuits beat two of three opponents and the Mustangs defeated one of three at the Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield in a four-way competition along with Greenwich (third Div. I) and Hamden.

The Cardinals improved to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the FCIAC by outscoring Prep, Warde and Hamden with a 150 total. Prep (164) beat Warde (169) and Hamden (185) to move to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the SCC. The Mustangs' losses to Greenwich, seeking its third straight conference title, and Prep and win over the Green Dragons left their records at 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the FCIAC.

Paul Pastore, of Greenwich, was the medalist by shooting an 35. Sophomore Andrew Sciarretta, who shared the Div. I individual championship last year, was Prep's top scorer with a 39. Junior Tom Gannon (39), playing at No. 4, had the low score for Warde (18th Div. I).

On April 22, Prep outshot Xavier 157-168 at the Country Club of Fairfield. Following four more matches at Brooklawn, the Jesuits end their home schedule by playing Staples at the Patterson Club. But they consider Brooklawn their home course.

"Being that we both play here at Brooklawn, (Warde coach Bob Bigonette) and I were talking a couple of years ago and agreed to make an effort to schedule one of our matches outside the league to be against each other," said Prep coach Robert Bernier. "It's always good to play against teams you don't typically play against. Every now and then we play teams in the FCIAC like Greenwich and Ridgefield, and we play Staples every year."

Matches against Prep will be attractive for at least two more years with the Jesuits featuring Sciarretta, who went as low as 36 in a round at Brooklawn a year ago. "It was not quite as good as I wanted," Sciarretta said, "but I'm not too upset about it. I just need to stay positive and get ready for the next match, and see if I can get it lower.

"I used my irons pretty well from the fairways. My driver off the tees was not too straight," Sciarretta said. "That put me in a couple of bad spots. And I probably could have made a few more putts."

Bernier said having an elite player serves as motivation to the rest of the Jesuits. "I think all of them would like to be like him in golf," Bernier said. "All of them want to chip in and not let it be `The Andrew Show.' "

Warde's No. 1 player, junior Tyler Mazut did not enjoy the start he was seeking but was pleased with how he finished up in scoring 44. "I started out rough but finished up strong," Mazut, a junior, said. "I just tried to hit the greens in regulation, and that's what I did to finish up."

Bigonette has been pleased with the strides taken by his young team this spring. "We still have plenty of room to improve. We're a pretty inexperienced squad," Bigonette said. "I think after a few more matches under our belt, we'll start to improve."

Gannon and Dan Levy (43), at No. 3, each played the fifth match of his high school career on Thursday, Bigonette said.
