UB VOLLEYBALL PLAYS HOST: Because it finished first in the league's regular-season standings, the University of Bridgeport volleyball team will be hosting the 2012 East Coast Conference championship tournament in UB's Hubbell Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday.
The top-seeded Purple Knights, who are 23-4 overall and 15-1 in conference play this season, have won 11 straight matches. They will take on the No. 4-seeded Dowling College Golden Lions (21-13 overall, 8-8 ECC) in the opening match of the tournament Friday at 5. In Friday's other semifinal, the No. 2 seed New York Institute of Technology Bears (21-8 overall, 12-4 ECC) will face the No. 3 seed LIU Post Pioneers (22-13, 11-5 ECC).at 7:30. Friday's winners will meet for the championship at Saturday at 5, with the winner of that match receiving an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship tournament that will begin on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Bridgeport is seeking its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II tournament.
OSIECKI HONORED: New Haven quarterback Ryan Osiecki, the Most Outstanding Player of the Northeast-10 championship game, has been named to the conference's second team. Osiecki, the 2011 All-America honoree and NE-10 Offensive Player of the Year from Seymour, has gathered 1,356 yards through the air on 106-for-150 passing with 14 touchdowns this season. He has thrown just four interceptions.
Also, UNH's Raheem Stanley, David Stedman and Tom Herd were lauded as the league's top defensive player, top offensive lineman and top defensive lineman, respectively, while Peter Rossomando was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year.
As the No. 2 seed in Super Region One, the unbeaten Chargers earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Division II Championship. New Haven will host the winner of this weekend's matchup between No. 11 Indiana (Pa.) and No. 25 Shepherd (W.Va.) at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium in West Haven on Nov. 24 at noon.
