GYMNAST HONORED: Bridgeport sophomore Sasha Tsikhanovich has been selected as the ECAC Division II Gymnast of the Week. Tsikhanovich helped the Purple Knights to a pair of solid quad meet first-place finishes against strong competition on Saturday and Sunday, at Rutgers and Brown universities. At Rutgers, she was second in the all-around with a total of 39.025, as she won the floor exercise and was second on the beam and the bars. At Brown, Tsikhanovich won the all-around with a score of 39.375 as she won the beam and took second place in the other three individual events.
WALSH SELECTED: Fairfield women's soccer player Allison Walsh of Westport has been announced the winner of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association Ed Tremble Female Player of the Year award. She will be officially recognized at the organizations President's Award Dinner, Jan. 25, 2013 at the Farmington Marriott.
Walsh was named the 2012 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring a defensive unit that posted 10 shutouts during the 2012 campaign, including six in league play. Fairfield's shutout percentage was 55.6 percent, the 20th best in the nation beginning tournament week. She and the Stags allowed just 15 total goals, an 0.80 goals-against average, both the lowest total of any league school and 41st in the nation. Walsh was named to the first-team All-MAAC in 2012 as well, her second consecutive selection to the squad.
CASTRO AN MLS PICK: Sacred Heart senior Marcello Castro was selected by the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in the MLS Supplemental Draft Tuesday afternoon. Castro becomes the first player in Sacred Heart men's soccer history to be drafted byW the MLS.
