YOUTH CHAMPS: The Bridgeport Chargers of the United Youth Football organization have advanced to the New England regional finals in the fifth-grade division after defeating Shrewsbury, Mass., 18-6 last weekend. The Chargers won the state championship with a 19-2 defeat of New Britain the previous week.

UB VOLLEYBALL PLAYS NOV. 29: The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Leo Uzcategui, will open play in the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship East Regional hosted by the University of New Haven in West Haven on Nov. 29, when the No. 2 seed Purple Knights face the No. 7 Dowling College Golden Lions.

This year marks the fifth consecutive NCAA appearance for UB. Last season, Bridgeport won the NCAA Division II East Regional for the first time in school history defeating NYIT, Dowling and the host University of New Haven.

UB fell to the University of Tampa in the 2011 National Quarterfinals host by Cal State San Bernardino. In 2010, the Purple Knights defeated American International and New Haven before falling in the regional final to Dowling for the second straight season. In 2009, Bridgeport topped UMass Lowell and New Haven before falling to Dowling. In 2008, Bridgeport, making the program's first NCAA trip, defeated Bentley University in its regional opener before falling to Dowling College in the regional semifinals.

Bridgeport and Dowling, both members of the East Coast Conference, have already met three times this year with the Purple Knights winning each time, the last time on Friday in the ECC championship tournament semifinals. The Purple Knights would then win the 2012 ECC crown, the team's second in the last two seasons, with a four-set win over LIU Post on Saturday.

Joining UB and Dowling in the East Regional are No. 1 seed New Haven, No. 3 Adelphi, No. 4 NYIT, No. 5 Franklin Pierce, No. 6 LIU Post and No. 8 Dominican (N.Y.) College.

UB enters this year's NCAA Championship with an overall record of 25-4.

The tournament will have more than 40 high school teams participating, including Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Prep, Fairfield Warde, Amity, Barlow, St. Joseph, ND-Fairfield, McMahon, Staples, Newtown, Norwalk and Weston. For more information, visit www.sticksforsoldiers.org.
