Regional notes: Gaelettes celebrate 50; women's football tryouts

Bernice Nicolari and Celeste Beattie, the founders of Shelton High Gaelette basketball, were honored at the 50th anniversary gala last month at Grassy Hill Lodge in Derby. Nicolari, a member of five hall of fames and the Gaelettes' first coach, was the featured speaker. ... The Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame is inducting seven new members at its banquet today from 4-8 p.m. at the Aqua Turf in Southington. This year's class includes coaches Ted Garber, Liz Grote, Jeff Gull, Pam Hammersmith, Will Hunter, and Randy McCue (Norwalk) and player Jamie Hanford (Darien). For more information and to check on tickets, go to www.ctlacrosse.org. ... Joseph Matthews of Stratford finished first at the NMRA Ford Nationals Series at National Trails Raceway in Columbus, Ohio. The graduate of Stratford High and Western Connecticut races a 2002 Ford Lightning SVT. Running in the Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning Class, Matthews has finished in the top 10 for the last four years. This year he is in fourth place.
