Though the Brunswick School wrestling team had tough matches with rival Avon Old Farms School in previous years, it didn't have any trouble getting past one of its main rivals Wednesday, breezing past visiting Avon, 63-16, in its season-opener.

The Bruins won nine of the 12 matches against Avon, which won the WNEISWA championship last season. Brunswick junior Owen Schubert pinned his opponent in the second period in a 132-pound matchup and the Bruins cruised to victory by winning the next seven matches.

Jenior co-captain Jimmy Bell, senior co-captain Connor Kupersmith, senior Joe Caruso, junior Michael Keating, sophomore Matt Marvin, junior Dan Hughes and senior Will Rosato each won their respective matches for the Bruins (1-0). Sophomore Jack Jones gave Brunswick its first win of the day, pinning his foe in the second period. Brunswick and Avon will face each other again this weekend, as they are in the same pool at the Loomis Chaffee Holiday Duals.

Convent of the Sacred Heart raised its record to 2-0, routing visiting Millbrook School, 50-16.

Bridget Scaturro led four Tigers players in double figures with 11 points. Sisters Colleen and Claire O'Neill added 10 points apiece, as did Kayla Souza for the Tigers.

Sacred Heart will look to win its third straight to start the season Saturday against host Canterbury School.

Brunswick continued its hot start to the season, sweeping visiting Rye Country Day School, 7-0.

"We always have good matches with Rye," Bruins coach Jim Stephens said. "They have a very good team and our guys had to play hard to beat them."

Junior Hayes Murphy gave the Bruins a win at the No. 1 spot, upending John Schuck, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6. Senior Benton Turner was victorious at the second spot for Brunswick, beating Matt Swain, 11-7, 11-5, 11-5. Senior Alex Baldock was an 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 winner at No. 3, while Jarrett Odrich swept his foe at No. 4 for Brunswick (3-0).

David Yacobucci, Yousef Hindy and John Fitzgerald each won their matches 3-0 for the Bruins.

"We have a young team with only three players returning from last year, but we have a lot of experienced, tournament players," Stephens said.

The Bruins began their season Saturday with a 6-1 win over Westminster School and a 7-0 triumph against Salisbury School. Brunswick will be in action again Wednesday against visiting Choate Rosemary Hall.
