Roundup: Sacred Heart basketball returns with victory

The Convent of the Sacred Heart basketball team returned to action after Christmas break, beating Hopkins 43-24.

Claire O'Neill paced the Tigers with 10 points and five rebounds while Emily O'Sullivan had eight points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers improved to 7-2 and will travel to Miss Porter's Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Canterbury 50, Greenwich Academy 47: The Greenwich Academy basketball team fell on the road to Canterbury 50-47.

Galen Hughes led the Gators with 32 points.

Wrestling

Greenwich wrestling beat Westhill 39-36 in a competitive match until the end.

With Greenwich leading 39-33, 220 pound freshman Eric Menchaca won the match for Greenwich by losing the final match of the night by only a decision.

Had Westhill pinned in the final match of the night, the final score would have been 39-39, and Westhill would have won on the eighth tiebreaker (most first points scored, 14-12)

"It was the highlight match of the year for us so far," Greenwich coach George Albano said. "Hopefully this will spring board us for the rest of the season. Menchaca did a great job keeping his shoulders off the mat in his match."

All four Greenwich captains (Mark Chien, Eric Tack, Mike Gestal, and Grant Cucchissi) won their match. Tack, Gestal, and Cucchissi with first period pins.

Chien and Cucchissi both improve to 15-2.

The Cardinals will be at the Greater Hartford Open Saturday.

Boys hockey

Brunswick defeated Millbrook 4-3.

Bruins goalie Gryphon Richardson and the defense played a very strong, disciplined game according to head coach Ron VanBelle.

The Bruins got goals from Nick Viceconte, Stephan Seeger, Peter Khoury and Nick Jermain.

Brunswick is now 6-5-3 and hosts Dexter (Boston) Saturday.

Girls swimming

The Greenwich Academy swimming team lost a close meet to Hopkins 98-83.

The Gators picked up wins from Diana Tramontano in the 100 breaststroke, Olivia Hallisey in the 500 freestyle and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick in diving.

GA also won the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.The Gators will be back in the pool Jan. 19 at Cheshire Academy.
