In reaction to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, Houston Dynamo General Manager Chris Canetti, a Quinnipiac grad from Guilford, Conn., and Eric Da Costa, the Quinnipiac head soccer coach, have spearheaded a soccer-themed event open only to Newtown residents to be held on Jan. 7, the Los Angeles Times has reported. At least 30 Major League Soccer players -- including the Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan and the San Jose Earthquakes' Marcus Tracy, who grew up in Newtown -- join legends of the sport, including U.S. World Cup stars Mia Hamm and Cobi Jones and U.S. women's team captain Christine Rampone, for "Soccer Night in Newtown." According to the Times, representatives from 11 of the 19 MLS teams have already committed to the event.
