The Staples girls lacrosse team was outscored at even strength in the first half, and was only ahead because of the Wreckers' strong man-up in its game Tuesday against Fairfield Ludlowe.

Then the Wreckers' defense took over.

Staples held Ludlowe scoreless for more than 22 minutes in the second half as the Wreckers beat the Falcons 11-8 at Taft Field.

"It's nice to walk away with a win," Staples coach Cathy Schager said. "Ludlowe's always a tough competitor."

Senior Jessica Ambrose scored three goals, assisting on three others as Staples improved to 11-3. Ali Crofts scored twice and Remy Nolan added a goal for Staples.

"It's just what we need to keep our momentum up," Ambrose said. "It's a really big win."

Kendall Stevenson led Ludlowe with three goals and two assists. Sarah Nesi and Ali Gorab each tallied twice as the Falcons fell to 6-5.

"We did not play to our potential," Ludlowe coach Katy Delagi said. "Staples is a good team, and they played really well today."

Stevenson and Nesi -- each of whom is signed to play Divsion I lacrosse -- only scored single marks in the second half as Staples' defense, and Wreckers' face-off taker Maeve Flaherty, dominated the second half.

"Staples won the majority of draw controls," Delagi said. "And we were behind and that pressure just got to us too much."

"They've really come together on defense," Schager said of her unit.

The Wreckers offense also took advantage in the second half, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes. Staples scored the second half's first five goals, building an 11-5 advantage.

Ludlowe outscored Staples 5-3 at even strength in the first-half. But Meredith Hood, Deanna Schreiber and Samantha Bautista scored goals during a two-minute man-advantage in the first half that helped Staples carry a 6-5, halftime lead.

"We pushed the fast break," Schager said. "We had to take advantage of it, and the girls executed it beautifully."

"They were faster than our slides could come," Delagi said.
