Two Notre Dame-Fairfield boys basketball players-- and one starter-- have been removed from the team, effective immediately.

Freshman Marcus Blackwell was expelled from school and senior Tre McPherson will not play the rest of the season due to "student matters" that are being addressed by the school.

School athletic director Rob Bleggi could not comment on the matter because "It is a student matter being handled by administration."

McPherson was a Connecticut Post Super-15 player in 2011 and had started every game thus far for the Lancers, averaging 10 points per game. He was a four-year varsity player.

Blackwell was expected to provide depth, and head coach Vin Laczkoski was high on the freshman entering the year.

"He's going to be great," Laczkoski told the Fairfield Citizen on Dec. 5.

Laczkoski commented on the incident to the Connecticut Post, saying "It's a shame. But we have high standards here at Notre Dame. And the standards weren't upheld by some people and they are no longer with us."

The Lancers have lost two straight games and will play their first game without McPherson and Blackwell Friday night when they host Joel Barlow at 7 p.m.
