After seven long years of trying, the Fairfield Warde boys lacrosse team is finally a state playoff team.

The Mustangs clinched the berth with a 14-2 win over Bunnell Friday night at Fairfield Warde.

Nine different Mustangs scored goals, and 12 separate Warde players recorded points, keeping with the trend of the 2012 campaign.

"It's been a great team effort," Warde coach Tom Cunningham said. "Everyone gets involved."

The Mustangs followed their state-qualifying performance with a 12-4 loss at Wilton on Monday. Warde was tied with the state's No. 4 ranked team, 1-1 after a quarter, before the Warriors poured in five goals in the second quarter.

"They're a great team," Cunningham said. "They're good defensively and their midfielders are studs."

Warde was just 1-15 a year ago, and now in 2012, can finish above .500 and can still earn a home Class M state playoff game if it wins out.

"That would be a big step forward, from 1-15 to 10-6," Cunningham said. "We're trying to work our way up the standings to get a good game in states."
