Warde girls lacrosse fends off Staples

Fairfield Warde sophomore Amanda Orvis galloped down the field with the ball in her lacrosse stick in the second half of a tightly contest game against FCIAC rival Staples on Thursday afternoon. Orvis, who caught a pass from near the halfway line, raced down the center of the field before uncorking a high shot that found its way into the back of the cage.
The goal pushed the Mustangs lead to 7-5 with 10 minutes left in the second half, and Warde would eventually prevail 9-6 at Ginny Parker Field for its second straight win.
"(Staples) is a good team, there's no doubt about that," Warde coach Tom Davis said. "Our girls were intense today; they played a great game. "They held onto the ball, we didn't have many turnovers and the girls went to goal when they had to."

Orvis, who scored four goals in the win, scored the final three tallies for the Mustangs. Freshman Colleen Bannon scored for Staples to draw to within a goal after Orvis' sprint down the field, but Orvis scored less than a minute afterwards.
"I was just thinking that we've been working so hard this season," Orvis said of her second goal. "We've practiced shooting and changing levels. I just believed in myself and had confidence and really wanted to win the game, so I just took the shot and hoped for the best."
Sarah Reilly added a hat trick for Warde, which used a scoring binge in the first half to claim the victory.
The Wreckers (3-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead inside the first five minutes behind goals from Jenna McNicholas and Nicki Najarian, but the Mustangs were given a lifeline soon after. Staples was called for a stick-to-head penalty, giving the Mustangs a man advantage for two minutes. Warde took full advantage, scoring a pair of goals 42 seconds apart to tie the game.
The Mustangs (3-1-1) scored the next four goals to take a 6-2 lead before Paige Murray scored a goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half for the Wreckers.
"We jumped on (Staples) in the first half and stayed even with them in the second," Davis said.
Despite the man-down setback, Staples continued to control the first half and constantly tested Mustangs goalie Rebekah Snitkoff. The junior had most of the answers and made eight saves in the first period to keep Warde ahead at intermission.
"(Snitkoff) has been big all season, she's made some big saves," Davis said. "She's kept us in every game; she's spotting the ball well and passing it well."
Staples scored the first two goals of the second half to pull within 6-5, but took another two minute penalty after Orvis made it 7-5. Each team scored during that stretch before Warde tightened its defense down the stretch.
The win over Staples, which defeated Ridgefield in its season opener, should serve as a confidence booster for the Mustangs.
"It's exciting to be able to play such great competition, it's getting us so much better," Reilly said. "Going into this game we were so pumped up."
