Sneaker and streetwear fashion boutique opens at Mohegan Sun

Chris Blomstedt was adopted from South Korea at six months old and said he struggled finding his identity growing up. His parents once brought him into CHAMPS Sports, and he fell in love with the sneaker culture and what he felt when he looked at that sneaker wall.

He recently opened Portal, a streetwear fashion and sneaker store at Mohegan Sun.

"Sneakers always stuck with me and I ended up going to business school. I worked at a sneaker store and ended up getting the opportunity to open a store in an area where I grew up, Mohegan Sun," he said.

Customers can shop brands like BAPE, Yeezy, Nike and some local streetwear brands.

"Streetwear culture has always been 'by the people, for the people' and it's important to tap in to our local networks. It is very important to tie in the community even though we are in a casino," said Blomstedt. Portal offers “access to collections from the creators that shape the culture people know today,” a press release states.

"We really want to educate people on all the stories behind all the brands people are familiar with. We want to pivot away from the hype and focus on people’s stories and motivations, creating a connection with the creators,” Blomstedt said.

Blomstedt worked as an engineer for five years when he realized he wanted to make a career out of what he loved — fashion. He said he wants Portal customers to feel like themselves.

“Fashion provides us with a way to stand out, in our own terms and we have something here for everyone.”

“We’re really excited to have Portal launch in the Shops at Mohegan Sun and look forward to offering their visitors a variety of the hottest sneaker and streetwear apparel,” said Jeff Hamilton, President & General Manager of Mohegan Sun in a press release.
