St. Augustine students collect pennies in drive for peace foundation
The Student Council of St. Augustine School in Bridgeport conducted a Pennies for Peace drive during the 2009-10 school year. All classes from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade participated, collecting 100,000 pennies for Greg Mortenson's Central Asia Institute. All classes read or were read one of Mortenson's best-selling books, "Three Cups of Tea" or "Listen to the Wind."
Dedicating the school year to promoting peace, students designed peace pinwheels and peace flags to display throughout the school. These served as a reminder of their campaign to raise $1,000 in pennies for Mortenson's Pennies for Peace Foundation. Through their caring and sharing, the students became aware that they can make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time.
