National Dance Day in spotlight at Blue Back Square in West Hartford Sept. 19
Dancers and dance lovers from around Connecticut will be heading for the Webster Walk performance area at Blue Back Square in West Hartford Saturday, Sept. 19, for a statewide observance of National Dance Day, hosted by Hartford-based Connecticut Dance Alliance.
The event will be step lively from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and feature live performances and workshops from state dance studios and companies — such as The Graceful Planet Studio of Dance in Newtown — to independent artists and authors. The outdoor event is free; rain date is a day later.
“The Connecticut dance scene has been continuously growing due to the hard work of many devoted artists. It is so important to keep that momentum going, especially in light of current events,” said Katie Bittner, resident artist with the Hartford Dance Collective — one of the many local dance organizations that will celebrate the joy of dance at the event. National Dance Day, previously celebrated in July, was launched in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, the co-creator of “So You Think You Can Dance” and co-founder of American Dance Movement.
There will be dance literature book presentations by Connecticut authors; a Dance-Me-a-Story demonstration for young children; and a gently-used/new dancewear fundraiser, along with the display “Connecticut Dances - A Visual History,” a touring exhibition jointly presented by CDA and the Connecticut Historical Society.
Other participants include Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet, Studio8Sixty, ATTAK Dance Company, and Hartford area’s Immix Dance Project, along with Fred Astaire Dance Studio West Hartford; Dimensional Dance; The END Ensemble; Baila Con Gusto CT; Evjen Academy of Performing Arts; The Hartford Dance Collective; Arthur Murray Glastonbury; and Ballet Hartford performing with its new Pre-Professional Division.
The CDA is asking all participants and attendees to wear protective face coverings in light of the pandemic.
