Stamford theater celebrates ‘Grease’ anniversary with sing-a-long
The 40th anniversary of “Grease” is being celebrated with a special sing-a-long presentation at the Avon Theatre.
The movie, co-starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, spun off several top ten hits during the summer of 1978, including “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One That I Want.” The print being screened in Stamford comes with captioning during the musical numbers so that the audience can join in with the singers on the screen.
The Avon is also sponsoring a costume contest with prizes going to the best 1950s era outfits.
“Grease” took the country by storm in 1978, quickly surpassing “The Sound of Music” as the biggest grossing movie musical in Hollywood history. Travolta went to the top of the movie industry A-list when “Grease” opened just six months after his 1977 blockbuster “Saturday Night Fever.”
The film version takes liberties with the original 1972 Broadway stage show — including the addition of a new title tune — but audiences loved the changes.
