ND girls fall in Class S semifinals
Standing just one victory away from a trip to the Class S finals, the Notre Dame-Fairfield girls basketball team fell short in its quest for the championship, losing to Canton 52-42, ending its season.
"I thought our effort was really, really good," said Notre Dame coach Eric DeMarco, whose team had reached the SWC tournament final earlier this season. "Like good basketball teams that are well coached and have good players do, Canton consistently made us pay for our mistakes."
Canton, the top-seed, outscored No. 5 Notre Dame 11-2 in the final two minutes -- including a 7-for-8 showing from the foul line -- to open a bit of breathing room in what was otherwise an intense, back-and-forth battle.
The score was tied at 20 at halftime, and Canton closed the third quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 34-27 lead into the fourth quarter. A bucket by Notre Dame's Kayla Croswell tied the score at 38, and a layup by the Lancers' Taylor Ceballos tied it at 40, by that's as close as the Lancers came.
