Softball: Greenwich edges Fairfield Warde
Fittingly, Emily Delepine provided the game-winning hit for the Greenwich High School softball team on its Senior Day on Wednesday.
A senior outfielder, Delepine’s single to left field scored junior outfielder Katie Walko, giving Greenwich an exciting 5-4 eight-inning win over visiting Fairfield Warde in a key FCIAC matchup.
At 7-11, the Cardinals need one more win to qualify for the FCIAC playoffs.
“It feels really good to get this win, we really needed to win this game,” said Delepine, one of five seniors honored on Senior Day.
“I was extremely nervous when I got up to the plate, so I took a deep breath, got a good pitch to hit and smacked it.”
Junior Emma Beinstein, who plays third base, helped power the Cardinals’ lineup, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Beinstein went 3 for 4 with two RBI, while junior pitcher Sophia Prieto had one hit and two RBI.
Walko was 2 for 3 and junior shortstop Kelly Brogan had a hit for the Cardinals, who have won four straight games and are making a late-season run to qualify for the state tournament.
Julie Gambino, a junior outfielder, singled in the seventh inning, but Brogan was thrown out at the plate on a very close play to end the inning. Prieto went the distance to earn the win.
“Sophia did a great job of throwing strikes,” GHS coach Mary Beth Fratello said. “She changed speeds, located her pitches and settled down nicely. We’re so happy to get this win for our seniors. It was a big game for us.”
Greenwich is in action again on Saturday against visiting Danbury at 12 p.m.
